The Other Side of the Story - Giving People the Benefit of the Doubt

Silence is golden. Unless...

Mom's the Word

I was studying Talmud with my study partner one day in his house when the phone rang. He picked it up and he started talking non-stop with this person.

Although the right thing would normally be to tell the person that he's in the middle of studying and to hang up, I knew he must have had a good reason for not doing so. "He must be talking to his mother, and it's not nice to interrupt your mother," I thought to myself.

Finally he finished speaking, said goodbye and hung up. "I'm sorry to keep you waiting," he told me, "but I was talking to my mother."

"I thought so," I said.
