Dear Talmid,

With the approach of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur we at Ohr Somayach feel a special bond with our talmidim from the past, especially those who shared with us the inspiration all of us gained from the tefilot and sichot of the Yomim Noraim.

These are days of reflection on the past and resolution for the future. We look back on over forty years of founding, maintaining and expanding Ohr Somayach as the virtual mother of the major yeshivot for those returning to their roots. We take pride in the fact that we have functioned as a classical yeshiva, respected for its high standards by everyone in the yeshiva world, while offering rank newcomers the opportunity to discover their Jewish tradition.

With reflection comes resolution. We, together with all of our wonderful rabbeim and assistants, resolve to keep up our educational efforts while also improving the living conditions of our present and future talmidim. We also resolve to thus accommodate the growing number of talmidim being directed to us by our representatives throughout the world.

To you and to them we send our heartfelt wishes for a ketivah ve'chatimah tovah for a New Year filled with good health, success, prosperity and nachas.

Alumni Update

  • AN OHR SOMAYACH DINNER, organized by the members of the Mentors Mission and honoring four outstanding mentors, is scheduled for November 11th in Brooklyn. We would like to see the participation of an alumni delegation in this important fundraising event which will have a major impact on the Yeshiva's future. For information contact Rabbi Binyomin Holland or Rabbi Binyomin Schonblum at the Ohr Somayach International office:
Suite 2000, 326 Third Avenue, Lakewood, New Jersey
Tel. 732-994-5525, 732-994-55237 email: [email protected]
  • A TRIBUTE TO THE LATE ZEV WOLFSON zatzal, was included in the opening shmuse for the new zman in recognition of his role as the greatest supporter of Torah and Kiruv in our time. The Rosh Hayeshiva, Rav Nota Schiller, shlita, made a special trip to New Yorkfor nichum avelim to the Wolfson Family which carries on his historic efforts.
  • Ohr Somayach alumni participation in the SIYUM HASHASS celebrations which took place during bein hazmanim expressed itself in two ways. Mechina Rabbonim Rabbi Sholom Myers and Rabbi Nosson Adler organised a large delegation of alumni living in the US to attend the Siyum Hashass (in which Ohr Somayach's Rabbi Shmuel Bloom played a major organizing role), together with almost 100,000 Jews in MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. Here in Yerushalayim present talmidim and alumni attended the Siyum Hashass for English speakers. A number of alumni informed us that they personally finished Shass and one of our early talmidim, Rabbi Reuven Dembs, completed the third cycle of teaching Daf Hayomi in Netanya where he lives.
  • The Yesod Program vacated the MILIBuildingto make room for the growing Intermediate Program headed by Rabbi Avrohom Rockmill and entered new quarters in their own building not far from the Main Campus.
  • THE ANNUAL YEMEI NORAIM YOM IYUN for women will take place, please G-d, on Yom Rishon, 7 Tishrei, Sunday, September 23rd, in the Shirat Yerushalayim Hall. The roshei yeshiva and rabbonim of the yeshiva will give the inspiring talks for preparing for Yom Kippur.
  • A special KENNES HITORARUT in memory of our late beloved mashgiach, RABBI DOVID SPEYER zatzal, took place in the Yeshiva early in the new zman with rabbonim of the Yeshiva paying tribute.
  • The OHR LAGOLAH HERTZ INSTITUTE Program started off the new year with a full house and was significantly oversubscribed. Certainly a major factor is the reputation which this program has gained by not only preparing people for important positions here and abroad, but actually helping them find jobs. This last year alone close to twenty people found positions as rabbonim, teachers, outreach workers and mashgichei kashrut.
  • The English-language "Inyan" magazine of "Hamodia", in its August 15th issue, had a big spread on the OHR SOMAYACH MENTORS MISSION.
