Near Yam Hamelach (the Dead Sea) is a kibbutz with a most interesting name.
Kalya is mentioned in the Talmud as the name of a plant growing in the Yam Hamelach area which is used in the manufacture of soap. The kibbutz took on the name of this plant but after the Six Day War this name became popular as an acronym for the revival of the Dead Sea: KAm Latchiya Yam Hamelach (the Dead Sea has come to life).
As any visitor to that area can see, the once "dead" sea today brings life to the many people enjoying its therapeutic waters and luxurious hotels, not to mention the major medical and cosmetic industries that have been developed from its rich mineral content.
